GE HealthCare and MediView Unveil World's First Augmented Reality Interventional Suite, Set to Revolutionize Interventional Radiology

Friday, June 21, 2024

GE HealthCare and MediView XR have announced the successful installation and initial clinical use of the OmnifyXR Interventional Suite1 at North Star Vascular and Interventional in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

This innovative suite combines augmented reality (AR) technology with live medical imaging, 3D anatomy visualization, and advanced imaging capabilities, aiming to enhance precision care delivery across various interventional procedures.

Interventional radiology relies heavily on advanced imaging and visualization solutions to treat conditions like cancer and cardiovascular diseases with minimal surgical invasiveness. However, practitioners often face challenges such as restricted visibility and cumbersome workspace adjustments during procedures.

OmnifyXR addresses these challenges by seamlessly integrating into existing interventional suites and leveraging AR to improve workflow efficiency, ergonomic comfort, visualization, and collaborative capabilities.

Key features of OmnifyXR include:

  • Heads-up Display (HUD) for Workflow Efficiency: The HUD headset displays multiple live video streams (such as Live Fluoroscopy, Reference Image, Advantage Workstation Image, Ultrasound, and Hemodynamics) in a customizable manner. Clinicians can adjust size, angle, and orientation according to their workflow needs and use voice commands for hands-free interaction.

  • Enhanced Visualization with 3D Assist: Clinicians can interact with a holographic 3D model of the patient's anatomy, facilitating intraprocedural planning and visualization of complex anatomies.

  • Remote Collaboration: OmnifyXR supports remote collaboration, consultation, training, and proctoring by enabling real-time sharing of the clinician's holographic experience through any internet-connected device, fostering collaborative care from any location.

Dr. Jafar Golzarian of North Star Vascular and Interventional, who performed the world's first clinical procedures using OmnifyXR, praised its impact: "The heads-up display and AR capabilities, particularly the 3D anatomical view, offer new perspectives on treatment. This technology has the potential to significantly improve clinical outcomes."

Dr. Amin Astani, also from North Star Vascular and Interventional, emphasized the practical benefits: "OmnifyXR changes how I approach cases.

With GE HealthCare's Allia platform, I can create detailed 3D models quickly without compromising sterility, which helps in decision-making during procedures."

OmnifyXR, developed in collaboration between MediView and GE HealthCare, is currently available in the United States, with plans for global expansion.

It is compatible exclusively with GE HealthCare's interventional X-ray systems, such as the Allia IGS and Innova IGS platforms with AutoRight, which support advanced imaging and procedural guidance through digital video distribution.
